Together We Can Make Healthy Air

Saturday, September 3, 2011

The air that many of us breathe in our neighbourhoods and on our way to work and school is damaging our health. The scale of the problem is nationwide, causing an invisible public health crisis across the UK. Every year, 29,000 premature deaths are attributable to poor air quality in the UK – nearly 5% of all annual UK deaths – with an average loss of life expectancy of eleven years.
The Healthy Air Campaign, launched in London on July 5th 2011, will seek to increase public awareness and understanding of the health impacts of air pollution and help communities reduce those impacts. It will achieve this by:
  • Promoting active lifestyles among individuals, as part of a joined-up sustainable transport, air quality and public health approach within communities
  • Driving action to effectively monitor, report and reduce air pollution at a local and national level
  • Advocating a new government air quality and public health strategy integrated across departments.
We believe that with political will from the top and action from the ground up, this public health crisis can be stopped in its tracks.
